Working a desk job can be tough. Not only is there that part of you that wants to break free from the desk and get out to enjoy the world, there is also the health benefits that come with getting out from behind that desk. Unfortunately, you need that job to your bills and most of your job involves you seated and on a computer. What can you do?
Here are some 8 simple tips you can do:
1) Get up and walk over to see a coworker
Have something to talk about with a colleague? Go over and talk to them instead of just sending an email. You get to burn some calories and they will probably enjoy interacting with an actual human being for a change.
2) Eat your lunch outside, instead of eating at your desk
If the weather is nice, take your lunch outside. Enjoy the atmosphere for a bit and take a walk after, instead of just eating at your desk.
3) Ask your employer to consider standing desks
Who says you have to be seated to work on a computer. A standing desk can do wonders for your health and there are solutions that are quick and affordable.
4) Stand up when you’re on the phone
Standing up every so often helps get your blood circulating and burns calories. Just make it a point to stand up during every phone call. It might even help you pay more attention to who you are talking to.
5) Get up every couple of hours
Set and alarm to go off at least every two hours. Walk away from the computer, stretch, rest your eyes, drink some water, and refresh.
6) Have walking meetings
Do you need to meet with someone for a few minutes? See if they would like to discuss things with you while you take a walk together. It will probably be a nice break from the every day for them (not to mention yourself) and it will keep you active.
7) Take a break for a glass of water regularly
Now that you are getting more active by doing steps 1-6, be sure to drink plenty of water.
8) Send your print job to the printer furthest from your desk
Even if it is just an extra 40 steps a day, those steps add up to 5 miles a year!
